(Imām Bukhārī narrates), Muhammad bin Salam narrated to us, he said: Abu Muawiyah informed us, from Al-A'mash, from Shaqiq, he said:
I was sitting with Hazrat Abdullah and Hazrat Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari (may Allāh be pleased with both of them); Hazrat Abu Musa said to Hazrat Abdullah: If a person becomes in janabah and cannot find water for a month, should he perform Tayammum and pray? Then what answer will you give to this verse of Surah Al-Ma'idah: "So if you do not find water, then perform Tayammum with clean earth" (Al-Ma'idah: )? Hazrat Abdullah said: If they are given permission for Tayammum in this situation, then soon those who find the water cold will perform Tayammum with (clean) earth. I said: Do you dislike Tayammum for this reason? He said: Yes. Then Hazrat Abu Musa said: Did you not hear what Hazrat Ammar (may Allāh be pleased with him) said to Hazrat Umar (may Allāh be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ sent me for some task, so I became in janabah, and I could not find water, so I rolled around in the earth just as an animal rolls around; then I mentioned this to the Prophet ﷺ, and he said: It would have been sufficient for you to do this — he struck his palm on the ground once, then shook it off, then wiped the back of the palm with his left hand — or he said: wiped the back of the left hand with his palm — then wiped his face with both palms. Hazrat Abdullah said: Did you not see that Hazrat Umar was not satisfied with Hazrat Ammar's statement (may Allāh be pleased with both of them)?
Ya'la added this, from Al-A'mash, from Shaqiq: I was with Hazrat Abdullah and Hazrat Abu Musa; Hazrat Abu Musa said: Did you not hear, Hazrat Ammar said to Hazrat Umar: Indeed the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ sent me and you; so I became in janabah, so I rolled on the ground on clean earth; then we came to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and informed him of this incident, and he said: This was sufficient for you — and he wiped his face and palms once.
