(Imām Bukhārī narrates): Abū al-Yamān narrated to us, he said: Shu'aib informed us, from al-Zuhrī, he said: Sālim ibn 'Abdullāh informed me that 'Abdullāh ibn 'Umar, may Allāh be pleased with them both, said that:
'Umar took a thick silk garment which was being sold in the market. He brought it to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ and said: O Messenger of Allāh! Buy this and wear it for adornment on the day of 'Eid and when some delegation comes to meet you. So the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said to him: This garment is for those people who have no share (in the Hereafter). Then 'Umar stayed as long as Allāh wished. Then the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ sent a silk garment to him. 'Umar took it and came to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, and said: O Messenger of Allāh! You said: This is the garment of those who have no share in the Hereafter, while you have sent this garment to me! Then the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: Sell it and fulfil your need with it.
حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو اليَمَانِ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنَا شُعَيْبٌ، عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ، قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي سَالِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، أَنَّ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ عُمَرَ، قَالَ
أَخَذَ عُمَرُ جُبَّةً مِنْ إِسْتبْرَقٍ تُبَاعُ فِي السُّوقِ، فَأَخَذَهَا، فَأَتَى بِهَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، ابْتَعْ هَذِهِ تَجَمَّلْ بِهَا لِلْعِيدِ وَالوُفُودِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنَّمَا هَذِهِ لِبَاسُ مَنْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ فَلَبِثَ عُمَرُ مَا شَاءَ اللَّهُ أَنْ يَلْبَثَ، ثُمَّ أَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِجُبَّةِ دِيبَاجٍ، فَأَقْبل بهَا عُمَرُ، فَأَتَى بِهَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّكَ قُلْتَ إِنَّمَا هَذِهِ لِبَاسُ منْ لاَ خَلاَقَ لَهُ وَأَرْسَلْتَ إِلَيَّ بِهَذِه الجُبَّةِ، فَقَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَبِيعُهَا أَوْ تُصِيبُ بِهَا حَاجَتَكَ
