Al-Imām al-Bukhārī narrates: ‘Abdullāh ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; he said: Abū ‘Āmir narrated to us; he said: Sulaymān ibn Bilāl al-Madīnī narrated to us from Rabī’ah ibn Abī ‘Abd al-Raḥmān

from Yazīd, a freed slave of Zayd ibn Khālid al-Junaydī, that a person asked about a lost item (something dropped on the road). The Prophet ﷺ said: “Take note of the strap (or binding) by which it was secured, or know the identification of its structure (or construction) and the way it was tied. Announce it for a year, then benefit from it yourself, and if its owner comes, return it to him.” The person asked: “What about a lost camel?” The Prophet ﷺ became angry, so much so that his cheeks turned red—or as the narrator said, his face turned red. He ﷺ said: “What is your relation to it? Its waterbag belongs to it, and its shoes belong to it. Let it drink from a spring and graze by the trees until its owner comes to take care of it.” The questioner then asked: “What about a lost goat?” He ﷺ said: “It belongs to you, or to your brother, or to the wolf.”
