(Imām Bukhārī narrates): Qutaibah bin Sa'id narrated to us, he said: Ya'qub bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Muhammad bin 'Abdullah bin 'Abd al-Qari al-Qurashi al-Iskandarani narrated to us, he said: Abu Hazim bin Dinar narrated to us that
some people came to Hadhrat Sahl bin Sa'd al-Sa'idi, and they were debating over what wood the pulpit was made of. They asked Hadhrat Sahl about this. Hadhrat Sahl said: "By Allāh! I surely know what it was made of, and indeed I saw it when it was placed on the first day, and the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ sat upon it. The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ sent someone to a certain woman" — Sahl had named that woman — "(you said to her: 'Order your son, who is a carpenter, to make for me a pulpit having steps, on which I may sit when I speak to the people.') That woman ordered her son, so he made that pulpit from the wood of tarfa' al-ghabah (tamarisk). Then that woman sent it to the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ. You gave the order, so it was placed at that spot. Then I saw the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ lead the prayer on this pulpit. You said the takbir while you were on this pulpit, then you performed ruku' on this pulpit, then you came down from the pulpit and went back on your feet, then you prostrated at the base of the pulpit, then you did the same (for the second rak'ah). Then when you finished leading the prayer, you turned towards the people and said: 'O people! I led this prayer so that you may follow me and so that you may learn the way of my prayer.'"
