Al-Imām al-Bukhārī narrates that Abū al-Yamān narrated to us; he said: Shu’ayb informed us; al-Imām Abū ‘Abdullāh al-Bukhārī says: And Ibn Wahb said: Yūnus informed us from Ibn Shihāb from ‘Ubaydullāh ibn ‘Abdullāh ibn Abī Thawr from ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās

from Ḥarī (ḥ); from ‘Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb. He reported that he and his companion, an Anṣārī, lived in the territory of Banu Umayyah ibn Zayd and their settlements, which were in the upper part of Madīnah. They would go in turns to the presence of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ to seek knowledge. One day it would be his turn; the next day, it would be his companion’s turn. When it was his turn, he would bring the news of the revelation of the day, and when it was his companion’s turn, he would do the same. One day, his Anṣārī companion came on his turn and knocked very forcefully on the door, asking: “Is he there?” He (the narrator) became frightened and approached, and his companion said: “A very serious incident has occurred.” ʿUmar said: He went to Ḥafṣah, who was crying. He asked: “Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divorce you?” She replied: “I don’t know.” Then he went to the Prophet ﷺ and stood before him, asking: “Have you divorced your wives?” The Prophet ﷺ said: “No.” He said: “Allāhu Akbar.”
