(Imām Bukhārī narrates): Bishr bin Muhammad al-Marwazi narrated to us, he said: Abdullah informed us, he said: Yunus informed us, from al-Zuhri, he said: Salim bin Abdullah informed us, from Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allāh be pleased with them both), he narrated that I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ saying this:

Every one of you is a guardian.

And Laith added this, that Yunus said: Ruzaiq bin Hakim wrote to Ibn Shihab, and on that day I was with him in Wadi al-Qura: What is your opinion, should I establish Jumu'ah? And Ruzaiq was the administrator over that land and worked in it, and in it there was a gathering of Abyssinians and other people, and Ruzaiq in those days was the governor over Ailah. So Ibn Shihab wrote a reply, and I was listening. He commanded him to establish Jumu'ah, and informed him that Salim had narrated this hadith to him, that Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allāh be pleased with them both) narrates that I heard the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ saying this: Every one of you is a guardian, and every person is answerable for those under him. The head of a country is a guardian, and he is answerable for those under him. A man is the guardian of his household, and he is answerable for his household. And a woman is the guardian of her husband's house, and she is answerable for those under her. And a servant is the guardian of his master's property, and he is answerable for the things under his disposal. And I think that he said: And a man is the guardian of his father's property, and is answerable for the things under his disposal. And every one of you is a guardian, and he will be asked about those under him.
