Al-Imām al-Bukhārī narrates: Muḥammad ibn Bashshār narrated to us; he said: Ghundar narrated to us; he said: Shu’bah narrated to us

from Abū Jamrah. He said: I used to act as an interpreter between Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allāh Almighty be content with both of them) and the people. He narrated that the delegation of ‘Abd al-Qays came to the Prophet ﷺ. He said: “Who is this delegation?” or “Who are these people?” They said: “Rabī’ah.” He said: “Welcome to the people,” or “Welcome to the delegation—neither disgraced nor regretful!” They said: “We have come to you from a far distance, and between us and you is this tribe of disbelievers from Muḍar. We are only able to reach you during the sacred months. So give us a comprehensive command which we can convey to those we have left behind, and by which we may enter Paradise.” So he commanded them with four matters and forbade them from four matters. He commanded them to have faith in Allāh alone. He said: “Do you know what faith in Allāh alone is?” They said: “Allāh and His Messenger know best.” He said: “To testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allāh, and that Muḥammad (ﷺ) is the Messenger of Allāh; to establish prayer; to give zakāh; to fast the month of Ramaḍān; and to give one-fifth of the spoils of war.” And he forbade them from using hollowed gourds, green glazed jars, and vessels coated with pitch (for preparing intoxicating drinks).

Shu’bah said: Sometimes he mentioned naqīr, and sometimes he mentioned muqayyar (pitch-coated vessels). He ﷺ then said: “Remember these matters and convey them to those you have left behind.”
