Sub-Chapter (Baab)

Sahih Al Bukhari 806

(Imām Bukhārī narrates): Abū al-Yamān narrated to us, he said: Shu'aib informed us, from al-Zuhrī, he said: Sa'īd ibn al-Musayyab and 'Atā' ibn Yazīd al-Laithī informed me that Abū Hurairah, may Allāh be pleased with him, informed them that:

the people said: O Messenger of Allāh! Will we see our Lord on the Day of Resurrection? He said: Do you have any difficulty in seeing the moon on the night of the full moon, when there is no cloud before it? The Companions said: No! O Messenger of Allāh! He said: Do you have any difficulty in seeing the sun, when there is no cloud before it? The Companions said: No! He said: Then you will see your Lord in the same way. The people will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection, so Allāh will say: Whoever used to worship something, let him follow it. So some of them will follow the sun, and some of them will follow the moon, and some of them will follow idols. And this ummah will remain; in this ummah there will also be its hypocrites. Then Allāh the Exalted will come to them and say: I am your Lord. So they will say: We will stay here until our Lord comes to us; when our Lord comes, we will recognize Him. Then Allāh the Exalted will come to them and say: I am your Lord. They will say: You are our Lord. So He will call them. Then a bridge will be laid over the middle of Jahannam. So I will be the first of the messengers to cross over it with his ummah, and on that day none will speak except the messengers, and the speech of the messengers on that day will be: O Allāh! Keep safe, keep safe! And in Jahannam there will be hooks like the thorns of the sa'dān tree. Have you seen the thorns of the sa'dān tree? The Companions said: Yes indeed! He said: Indeed, those hooks will be like the thorns of the sa'dān tree, but no one except Allāh knows the extent of their greatness. They will snatch people according to the measure of their sins. So some of them will perish because of their sin, and some of them will be cut, then they will be saved, until Allāh the Exalted, upon whomever among the people of the Fire He intends mercy, will command the angels to bring out from among them whoever used to worship Allāh the Exalted. Then the angels will bring them out, and they will recognize them by the marks of sajdah, for Allāh the Exalted has made it forbidden for the Fire to consume the marks of sajdah. So they will be brought out from the Fire, having been burnt to charcoal; then the water of life will be poured upon them, so they will sprout just as a seed sprouts in the silt of a flood. Then Allāh the Exalted will finish judging between the servants, and one person will remain between Paradise and the Fire, and he will be the last of those coming out of the Fire, and also the last of those entering Paradise. At that time his face will be towards the Fire; he will say: O my Lord! Turn my face away from the Fire; its stench has destroyed me and its intensity has burnt me. Allāh the Exalted will say: If this is done for you, will you perhaps then ask for something else besides this? So he will say: No, by Your might! Then Allāh the Exalted will take a firm covenant and pledge from him, so Allāh will turn his face away from the Fire. Then when he turns towards Paradise and sees its freshness, he will stand silent for as long as Allāh wishes to keep him silent. Then he will say: O my Lord! Bring me to the gate of Paradise. So Allāh the Exalted will say to him: Did you not make a firm covenant and pledge that you would not ask for anything besides your first request? So he will say: O my Lord! Do not let me be the most unfortunate of Your creation. Allāh the Exalted will say: If this request of yours is fulfilled, is it then expected that you will not ask for anything else? He will say: No, by Your might! I will not ask for anything besides this. Then Allāh the Exalted will take from him whatever covenant and pledge He wishes, then He will bring him to the gate of Paradise. So when he reaches the gate of Paradise and sees the splendour, freshness, and beauty of Paradise, he will remain silent for as long as Allāh the Exalted wishes to keep him silent. Then he will say: O my Lord! Admit me into Paradise! Allāh the Exalted will say: O son of Ādam! Woe to you! How much of a covenant-breaker you are! Did you not make firm covenants and pledges that you would not ask for anything besides what you were given? So he will say: O my Lord! Do not make me the most unfortunate of Your creation. So Allāh, Mighty and Glorious, will laugh at him, then will permit him to enter Paradise, then will say to him: Now make a wish. So he will wish, until when his wish is fulfilled, Allāh will say to him: And add such-and-such a thing, and his Lord, Mighty and Glorious, will remind him of things, until when his wishes come to an end, Allāh will say to him: Take these things as well, and along with them take another like them. Abū Sa'īd al-Khudrī said to Abū Hurairah, may Allāh be pleased with him: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: Allāh, Mighty and Glorious, will say: For you are these things, and ten more examples of them. Abū Hurairah said: I only remember this saying of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ: Allāh, Mighty and Glorious, said: For you are these things and along with them one like them. Abū Sa'īd al-Khudrī, may Allāh be pleased with him, said: I heard this from you: For you are these and ten examples of them.
