(Imām Bukhārī narrates): Muhammad ibn al-'Alā' narrated to us, he said: Hammād ibn Usāmah narrated to us, from Buraid ibn 'Abdullāh, from Abī Burdah, from Abī Mūsā, from the Prophet ﷺ, he said:
The example of the guidance and knowledge with which Allāh has sent me is like abundant rain that falls upon land. Among the lands, some are fertile, which accept water and grow grass and abundant vegetation, and some lands are hard, they hold back the water, so Allāh gives benefit to people through it: they drink this water and give it to their livestock to drink, and they cultivate with this water. And the rain falls upon another kind of land which is smooth; it neither holds back the water nor grows vegetation. This is the example of the person who acquires the fiqh (understanding) of the religion, and the knowledge and guidance with which Allāh has sent me benefits him, so he learns and teaches. And this is the example of the person who pays no attention to this guidance and does not accept at all this guidance of Allāh with which I have been sent.
Imām Abū 'Abdullāh (Bukhārī) said: Ishāq said: Some lands drink up the water. "Qā'" means: that upon which water rises. "Wa al-Safsaf" means: level ground.
