(Imām Bukhārī narrates): Abū al-Qāsim Khālid ibn Khilī narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Harb narrated to us, he said: Al-Awzā'ī said: Al-Zuhrī informed us, from 'Ubaidullāh ibn 'Abdullāh ibn 'Utbah ibn Mas'ūd, from Ibn 'Abbās, may Allāh be pleased with them both, he narrates that a discussion took place between him and Hurr ibn Qais ibn Hisn al-Fazārī regarding the identity of the companion of Mūsā, upon him peace. Then Ubayy ibn Ka'b, may Allāh be pleased with him, passed by them. Ibn 'Abbās called him, then said: A discussion has taken place between me and this companion of mine regarding that companion of Mūsā, whom Mūsā asked about meeting. Ubayy said: Yes! I heard the Prophet ﷺ mentioning it, he was saying:
that Mūsā was in a gathering of Banī Isrā'īl when a person came to him and said: Do you know that there is anyone more knowledgeable than you? Mūsā said: No! So Allāh, Mighty and Glorious, revealed to Mūsā: Yes indeed! Our servant is Khidr. Then Mūsā asked about the way to meet him, so Allāh the Exalted made the fish a sign for him, and it was said to him that wherever you find the fish lost, return from there, then soon you will meet him. Then Mūsā, upon him peace, was following the traces of the fish in the sea. Then the student of Mūsā said to Mūsā, he said: "Did you see, when we were resting leaning against the rock, there I forgot to mention the fish, and indeed it was Satan who made me forget to mention it." (Al-Kahf: ). Mūsā said: "That is what we were seeking. Then the two of them returned, retracing their footsteps." (Al-Kahf: ). Then the two of them found Khidr. Then that happened to them which Allāh has mentioned in His Book.
