(Imām Bukhārī narrates): Mūsā narrated to us, he said: Abū 'Awānah narrated to us, he said: 'Abdul-Malik ibn 'Umair narrated to us, from Jābir ibn Samurah, may Allāh be pleased with him, he narrated that:

the people of Kūfah complained to 'Umar, may Allāh be pleased with him, about Sa'd ibn Abī Waqqās, may Allāh be pleased with him. 'Umar removed Sa'd from office and appointed 'Ammār, may Allāh be pleased with him, as governor over the people of Kūfah. The people of Kūfah, in their complaint, mentioned that Sa'd did not lead the prayer well. 'Umar summoned him, then said: O Abū Ishāq! These people claim that you do not lead the prayer well. Abū Ishāq said: Listen! By Allāh! I lead them in prayer in the manner of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ; I do not fall short in it. I lead the 'Ishā' prayer; I stand long in the first two rak'ahs and shorten the last two rak'ahs. 'Umar said: O Abū Ishāq! This is what was thought about you. Then 'Umar sent a person, or several persons, with Sa'd towards Kūfah. Then he asked the people of Kūfah about Sa'd, and asked the people of every mosque about Sa'd. Everyone praised and commended him, until they went to a mosque of Banū 'Abs. Then a man among them, named Usāmah ibn Qatādah, whose kunyah was Abū Sa'dah, stood up. He said: Since you have put us under oath, listen! Indeed, Sa'd does not go out with the army, and does not distribute (the spoils of war) equally, and does not act justly in judgments. Sa'd said: Listen! By Allāh! I make three supplications (against him): O Allāh! If this servant of Yours is a liar, and has stood up for the sake of show and being heard, then lengthen his life, and increase his poverty, and afflict him with tribulations. Jābir ibn Samurah said: Later, when this man was asked about, he used to say: I am very old and afflicted with tribulation; I face tribulation because of Sa'd's supplication. 'Abdul-Malik said: I saw this man later; because of old age, his eyebrows had fallen over his eyes, and he used to tease girls along the way.
