(Imām Bukhārī narrates): Ismā'īl narrated to us, he said: Imām Mālik ibn Anas narrated to us, from Hishām ibn 'Urwah, from his father, from 'Ā'ishah, Umm al-Mu'minīn, may Allāh be pleased with her, that:
the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said in his illness: Convey this command to Abū Bakr, that he should lead the people in prayer. 'Ā'ishah, may Allāh be pleased with her, said: I said that when Abū Bakr stands in your place, he will not be able to make the worshippers hear the Qur'ān because of weeping, so command 'Umar that he should lead the prayer. He said: Convey this command to Abū Bakr, that he should lead the people in prayer. 'Ā'ishah, may Allāh be pleased with her, said to Hafsah, may Allāh be pleased with her: Say to the Prophet ﷺ that when Abū Bakr stands in your place, he will not be able to make the people hear the Qur'ān because of weeping, so command 'Umar that he should lead the people in prayer. So Hafsah did so. Then the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: Be silent! Indeed you are like the women of the time of Yūsuf. Convey this command to Abū Bakr, that he should lead the people in prayer. Hafsah said to 'Ā'ishah: I can obtain no good from you.
