(Imām Bukhārī narrates): Musaddad narrated to us, he said: 'Abdullāh ibn Dāwūd narrated to us, he said: Al-A'mash narrated to us, from Ibrāhīm, from al-Aswad, from 'Ā'ishah, may Allāh be pleased with her, she narrated:

When the Prophet ﷺ became afflicted with the illness in which he passed away, Bilāl, may Allāh be pleased with him, came to inform him of the prayer. He said: Convey the command to Abū Bakr that he should lead the prayer. I said: Abū Bakr is very soft-hearted; when he stands in your place, he will weep, so he will not be able to recite the Qur'ān. He said: Convey the command to Abū Bakr that he should lead the prayer. I said the same again. He said again, a third or fourth time: You are like the women of the time of Yūsuf. Convey the command to Abū Bakr that he should lead the prayer. So Abū Bakr led the prayer, and the Prophet ﷺ came out supported by two men — it is as if I am looking towards him — he was walking, dragging his feet upon the ground, from which marks were being left on the ground. When Abū Bakr saw him, he began to step back. He gestured that he should continue leading the prayer. Then Abū Bakr, may Allāh be pleased with him, stepped back, and the Prophet ﷺ sat beside Abū Bakr, and Abū Bakr was conveying the takbīr to those praying.
