(Imām Bukhārī narrates): 'Abdullāh ibn Yūsuf narrated to us, he said: Imām Mālik informed us, from Ibn Shihāb, from Anas ibn Mālik, may Allāh be pleased with him, he narrates that:

the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ mounted a horse, he fell from that horse and his right side was injured. So he prayed one of the prayers sitting, so we too prayed behind him sitting. When he finished the prayer, he said: The imām is appointed only so that he may be followed; so when he prays standing, you pray standing; and when he performs rukū', you perform rukū'; and when he raises his head from rukū', you raise your head from rukū'; and when he says "Sami'a Allāhu liman hamidah", you say "Rabbanā wa laka al-hamd"; and when he prays standing, you pray standing; and when he prays sitting, all of you pray sitting.

Imām Abū 'Abdullāh (Bukhārī) said: Humaidī narrated that what the Prophet ﷺ said — "when the imām prays sitting, you pray sitting" — this saying of his was during his earlier illness. After that, the Prophet ﷺ prayed sitting while the people stood behind him, and he did not command them to sit. And it is always the last hadith that is acted upon, and the last hadith is this action of the Prophet ﷺ.
