(Imām Bukhārī narrates): Ahmad ibn Yūnus narrated to us, he said: Zā'idah narrated to us, from Mūsā ibn Abī 'Ā'ishah, from 'Ubaidullāh ibn 'Abdullāh ibn 'Utbah, he said:

I came to 'Ā'ishah, may Allāh be pleased with her, so I said: Will you not narrate to me the hadith about the illness of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ? She said: Why not! The condition of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ became heavy. He asked: Have the people prayed? We said: No! They are waiting for you. He said: Pour water for me in a large basin. 'Ā'ishah narrated: We did so. He performed ghusl in it, then he began to get up with difficulty, then he became unconscious. Then he regained consciousness, so he ﷺ asked: Have the people prayed? We said: No, O Messenger of Allāh! They are waiting for you. He said: Put water for me in the basin. He sat in the basin, then he performed ghusl, then he began to get up, then he became unconscious. Then he regained consciousness, so he asked: Have the people prayed? We said: No! O Messenger of Allāh! They are waiting for you. So he said: Put water for me in the basin. He sat in the basin, then he performed ghusl, then he began to get up, then he became unconscious. Then he regained consciousness, so he asked: Have the people prayed? We said: No! O Messenger of Allāh! They are waiting for you. And at that time the people were sitting in the mosque waiting for the Prophet ﷺ for the 'Ishā' prayer. Then the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ sent a message to Abū Bakr that he should lead the people in prayer. So a messenger went to Abū Bakr and said that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ commands you to lead the people in prayer. Abū Bakr was tender-hearted; he said: O 'Umar! You lead the people in prayer. 'Umar said to him: You are more entitled to leading the prayer. Then in those days Abū Bakr led the prayer. Then the Prophet ﷺ felt some improvement in his condition, so he came out for the Zuhr prayer between two men, one of whom was 'Abbās, may Allāh be pleased with him, and Abū Bakr was leading the people in prayer. When Abū Bakr saw him, he began to step back. The Prophet ﷺ gestured to him that he should not step back. He said: Seat me beside Abū Bakr. They seated him beside Abū Bakr. Then Abū Bakr was praying, following the prayer of the Prophet ﷺ, and the people were following the prayer of Abū Bakr, and the Prophet ﷺ was sitting. 'Ubaidullāh said: Then I went to Ibn 'Abbās, may Allāh be pleased with him. I said to him: Shall I not narrate to you the hadith which 'Ā'ishah, may Allāh be pleased with her, narrated to me about the illness of the Prophet ﷺ? He said: Narrate it. Then I narrated to him the hadith narrated by 'Ā'ishah. He did not deny anything from it, except that he asked: Did 'Ā'ishah name that other person, who was with 'Abbās? I said: No! Ibn 'Abbās, may Allāh be pleased with them both, said: He was 'Alī, may Allāh be pleased with him.
