from Sharīk ibn ʿAbdullāh ibn Abī ʿAwn, who said: I heard Anas ibn Mālik (رضي الله عنه) say: “We were sitting in the mosque with the Prophet ﷺ when a man came riding on a camel. He made the camel kneel inside the mosque, tied it, and said to the Companions: ‘Which one of you is Muhammad ﷺ?’ At that moment the Prophet ﷺ was sitting reclining among his companions. We said: ‘This white-complexioned man who is reclining.’ The man then said to the Prophet ﷺ: ‘O son of ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib!’ The Prophet ﷺ replied, ‘I have answered you already.’ The man continued: ‘I will ask you something and speak sternly. Do not become upset with me in your heart.’ The Prophet ﷺ said, ‘Ask whatever you wish.’ The man said: ‘I ask you by Allah, and by the Lord of those before you—has Allah truly sent you as a messenger to all people?’ The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘O Allah, yes!’ The man said: ‘I ask you by Allah—has Allah ordered you that we pray five times each day and night?’ The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘O Allah, yes!’ He said: ‘I ask you by Allah—has Allah ordered you that we fast this month (of Ramadan)?’ The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘O Allah, yes!’ He said: ‘I ask you by Allah—has Allah ordered you to take charity (zakāh) from our wealthy and distribute it among our poor?’ The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘O Allah, yes!’ The man then said: ‘I believe in what you have brought, and I am the messenger (representative) of my people behind me. I am Ḍimām ibn Thaʿlabah, the brother of Banū Saʿd ibn Abī Bakr.’”

Imām al-Bukhārī adds: This hadith was also narrated by Mūsā and ʿAlī ibn ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd from Sulaymān from Thābit from Anas (رضي الله عنه) from the Prophet ﷺ.
