Imam Bukhari narrates: Abu al-Nu'man narrated to us, he said: Mu'tamir bin Sulaiman narrated to us, he said: Abu Uthman narrated to us from Abdur Rahman bin Abi Bakr, may Allāh be pleased with them both, he said

that the people of the Suffah were poor people, and the Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever has food for two people, let him take a third person along, and whoever has food for four people, let him take a fifth or sixth person along. And Abu Bakr, may Allāh be pleased with him, took three people along, and the Prophet ﷺ took ten people along. Abdur Rahman said: There was I, my father, and my mother. The narrator said: I do not remember whether he said: and my wife and a servant. These people were shared between us and Abu Bakr. One day Abu Bakr ate the night meal with the Prophet ﷺ, and came and stayed at home until the Isha prayer was prayed. Then he returned to the Prophet ﷺ and stayed there until the Prophet ﷺ had eaten the night meal, then when a good part of the night had passed he came home. His wife said to Abu Bakr: What kept you from coming to your guests, or the guest? Abu Bakr asked: Did you not feed them? She said: The guests refused until you came. Food was presented to them but they refused to eat. Abdur Rahman said: I went and hid myself somewhere. Abu Bakr said: O reproached one, contemptible one! May Allāh cut off your nose. And he spoke very harshly of them. Then he said to the guests: Eat! May this food not be blessed for you. Then he said: By Allāh, I will never eat this food. Abdur Rahman said: And by Allāh, we would not take a single mouthful from this food but it would increase greatly from underneath. He said: Until the guests ate their fill, and the food was greater than it had been before. Abu Bakr looked at the food and it was the same amount, or even more than that. Abu Bakr said to his wife: O sister of Banu Firas! What is this matter? She replied: O coolness of my eyes! This food is far more than before, three times as much as before. Then Abu Bakr ate from that food and said: The oath I had taken not to eat from this food was an act of Shaytan. Then he ate a mouthful of that food, then he took that food to the Prophet ﷺ, then that food remained with him until the morning. And there was an agreement between us and a people, and that term had passed. So we seated twelve men separately, and with each man there were some more people as well. Allāh alone knows how many people were with each man. All of these people ate from that food.
