Sub-Chapter (Baab)

Sahih Al Bukhari 40

(Imam Bukhari narrates that) Amr bin Khalid narrated to us, he said: Zuhair narrated to us, he said: Abu Ishaq narrated to us, from Hazrat Al-Bara bin Azib (may Allāh be pleased with him), that

when the Prophet ﷺ first came to Madinah, he stayed with his maternal grandfather or maternal uncle among the Ansar, and he prayed facing Jerusalem for sixteen or seventeen months, and he wished that his Qiblah would be the House of Allāh (the Ka'bah), and the first prayer he prayed facing the House of Allāh was the Asr prayer, and the people prayed with him. Then a man who had prayed with him went out and passed by a mosque of people who were at that time in ruku. He said: I bear Allāh as witness that I have just prayed with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ facing Makkah. Then the people turned around within the prayer itself and turned toward the House of Allāh. And the Jews and the People of the Book had liked it when he prayed facing Jerusalem, and when he turned his face toward the House of Allāh, this was displeasing to them.

Zuhair said: Abu Ishaq narrated to us, from Al-Bara, in his hadith it is mentioned that before the change of the Qiblah, some people had died and some had been martyred, so we did not know on our own what to say regarding them; then Allāh the Exalted revealed this verse: "Allāh would not let your faith be lost." (Al-Baqarah: )
