(Imām Bukhārī narrates): Umar bin Hafs narrated to us, he said: My father narrated to us, from Al-A'mash, he said: I heard Shaqiq bin Salamah, he said:
I was with Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud and Hazrat Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari (may Allāh be pleased with both of them); Hazrat Abu Musa said to Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud: O Abu Abdur Rahman! When a man becomes in janabah and cannot find water, what should he do? Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud said: He should not pray until he finds water. Hazrat Abu Musa said: Then what explanation will you give for this hadith of Hazrat Ammar, when the Prophet ﷺ said to him: This was sufficient for you? Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud said: Did you not see that Hazrat Umar was not satisfied with this hadith? Hazrat Abu Musa said: Well! Leave aside Hazrat Ammar's hadith; tell me, what answer will you give regarding this verse of Tayammum? Then Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud did not understand what answer he should give. Then he said: Indeed, if we give people permission for Tayammum in this situation, then it is likely that if any of them finds the water cold, he will leave the water and perform Tayammum.
Al-A'mash says: I said to Shaqiq: Did Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud consider Tayammum disliked for a person in janabah only for this reason? He said: Yes!
