Sub-Chapter (Baab)

Sahih Al Bukhari 344

(Imām Bukhārī narrates): Musaddad narrated to us, he said: Yahya bin Sa'id narrated to me, he said: Auf narrated to us, he said: Abu Raja narrated to us, from Imran, he said:

We were on a journey with the Prophet ﷺ; indeed we were traveling at night, until we reached the last part of the night, then we lay down and slept — and for a traveler there is nothing sweeter than sleeping in the last part of the night — then only the heat of the sun woke us up. First such-and-such person woke up, then such-and-such person woke up, then such-and-such person woke up — Abu Raja had named these Companions, but Auf forgot them — then the fourth to wake up was Hazrat Umar bin Al-Khattab. And when the Prophet ﷺ was asleep, we would not wake him until he woke up himself, because we did not know what states came upon him during sleep. So when Hazrat Umar woke up and saw what calamity had befallen the people, and he was a very courageous man, he said "Allahu Akbar" loudly, then he kept saying "Allahu Akbar" loudly continuously, until the Prophet ﷺ woke up from his voice. When he woke up, the people complained to him about the calamity that had befallen them. He said: There is no harm — or he said: no loss; set out from here. So he set out; they had gone only a short distance when he got down from his mount and called for water for wudu, then he performed wudu, and the call for prayer was given, then he led the people in prayer. Then when he finished the prayer, he saw a man standing apart, who had not prayed with the people. He said: O so-and-so! What prevented you from praying with the people? He said: I have become in a state of janabah, and there is no water (for ghusl). He said: Intend clean earth (perform Tayammum); it is sufficient (for your purification). Then the Prophet ﷺ set out; then the people complained to him of thirst. He got down from his mount and called such-and-such person — Abu Raja named him, but Auf forgot — and called Hazrat Ali, and said: Both of you go and search for water. So the two of them went; they found a woman who had two large waterskins loaded on her camel. The two of them said to her: Where is water? She said: I have been guarding this water since yesterday until now, and our family is behind. The two of them said: Then come with us. She said: To where? The two of them said: To the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ. She said: To the one who is called "As-Sabi" (the one who has changed his religion)? They said: Yes! The very one you mean; so set out. Then they brought her to the Prophet ﷺ and told him the whole story. Then the Muslims made the woman get down from her camel, and the Prophet ﷺ called for a vessel, then opened the mouth of one of the large waterskins and poured water into the vessel, then tied the mouth of that waterskin, then opened the mouth of the lower part of the large waterskin and announced to the people to drink plentifully and give others to drink. Then whoever wanted drank as much as he wanted, and gave others to drink as much as he wanted, and at the end, water was given from the vessel to the man who was in janabah. He said: Go and pour water over yourself. And that woman was standing, watching what was being done with her water. And by Allāh! Water was drawn from those large waterskins, and it seemed to us that when they began drawing water from them, there was even more water in them than before. Then the Prophet ﷺ said: Gather (some food items) for her. Then Ajwa dates, wheat, barley, and sattu, etc. were gathered for her and tied in a bundle, and she was mounted on her camel, and that bundle was placed before her. He said to that woman: You know that we have not diminished your water at all, but Allāh the Exalted has given us water to drink. Then that woman reached her family, and she had been absent from them for so long; her family said: O so-and-so! Where were you detained for so long? She said: A very astonishing thing; two men met me and took me to the person who is called "Sabi" (one who changed religion); he did such-and-such and such-and-such — and she pointed with her middle finger and index finger toward the earth and the sky, saying: He is the greatest magician among the people, between this and this — or he is truly the Messenger of Allāh. After that, the Muslims used to attack the polytheists around her, but did not attack the settlement in which that woman lived. One day that woman said to her people: I think that these Muslims are deliberately leaving you alone; so do you have any inclination to accept Islam? So those people obeyed that woman and entered into Islam. Imam Abu Abdullah (Bukhari) said: "Saba" means: to leave one religion and enter another, and Abu Al-Aliyah said: "As-Sabi'in" is a sect of the People of the Book who recite the Zabur (Psalms).
