Muḥammad ibn Salām narrated to us; Ibn Fuḍayl informed us; Ḥuṣayn narrated to us; from Shaqīq;

from Masrūq, who said: I asked Umm Rūmān, the mother of Lady ‘Ā’ishah, about what was said about her (‘Ā’ishah). She said: While I was sitting with Lady ‘Ā’ishah, an Anṣārī woman came in to us, saying: “May Allāh do such-and-such to so-and-so!” I said to her, “Why?” She said, “Because he has spread the story.” Lady 'Āʾishah asked, “Which story?” So, the woman told her. Lady 'Āʾishah asked, “Has Abū Bakr and the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ heard about this?” She said, “Yes.” Lady 'Āʾishah then fell unconscious. When she regained consciousness, she had a fever and was trembling. Then, the Prophet ﷺ came and said: “What is the matter with her?” I said, “She has been seized by a fever because of the story that is being talked about.” She sat up and said: “By Allāh, if I swear an oath, you will not believe me; and if I offer an excuse, you will not accept it. My example and your example are like that of Ya'qūb (upon whom be peace) and his sons. So, Allāh is the One whose help is sought against what you describe.” Then, the Prophet ﷺ left. After that, Allāh revealed what He revealed (declaring her innocence). When he informed her, she said: “With the praise of Allāh — not with the praise of anyone else.”
