‘Abdullāh ibn Muḥammad narrated to us; Abū ‘Āmir ‘Abd al-Malik ibn ‘Amr narrated to us; he said: Ibrāhīm ibn Nāfi’ narrated to us, from Kathīr ibn Kathīr, from Sa’īd ibn Jubayr,

from Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allāh be content with them), who said: When the matter occurred between Ibrāhīm (upon whom be peace) and his family that occurred, he set out with Ismā'īl (upon whom be peace) and the mother of (the Prophet) Ismā'īl. With them was a water-skin containing water. The mother of (the Prophet) Ismā'īl would drink from the water-skin, and her milk would flow for her child, until they arrived at Makkah. He placed her beneath a tree, then Ibrāhīm (upon whom be peace) returned to his family. The mother of (the Prophet) Ismā'īl followed him until they reached Kadā’. From behind him she called: “O Ibrāhīm (upon whom be peace)! To whom are you leaving us?” He replied: “To Allāh.” She said: “I am content with Allāh.” So, she returned and continued drinking from the water-skin, and her milk continued to flow for her child, until the water finished. She then said: “If I go and look, perhaps I may sense someone.” She went and climbed al-Ṣafā and looked around to see if she could perceive anyone, but she did not sense anyone. When she reached the valley, she ran and came to al-Marwah and did the same several times. Then, she said: “If I go and see what has happened to the child.” She went and looked, and he was in the same condition, as if he were gasping near death. Her soul could not bear it. She said: “If I go and look again, perhaps I may sense someone.” She went again to al-Ṣafā, looked and looked, but sensed no one—until she completed seven rounds. Then she said: “If I go and see what has happened.” Suddenly, she heard a voice, so she said: “Help us, if you have any good.” Then it was Jibrīl (upon whom be peace). He struck the ground with his heel like this—pressing his heel upon the earth—and water burst forth. The mother of (the Prophet) Ismā'īl was astonished and began to gather it. Abū al-Qāsim (the Prophet ﷺ) said: “If she had left it, the water would have flowed on the surface.” She then drank from the water and her milk flowed for her child. Some people from Jurhum passed through the bottom of the valley and saw birds. They found that strange and said: “Birds only gather over water.” They sent a messenger who saw the water, returned, and informed them. They came to her and said: “O mother of (the Prophet) Ismā'īl, will you permit us to stay with you or live with you?” Her son grew up among them and married a woman from them. Later, Ibrāhīm felt the desire to check on his dependents, so he said to his family: “I am going to check on my dependents.” He came and greeted them and asked: “Where is Ismā'īl (upon whom be peace)?” His wife replied: “He has gone hunting.” He said: “When he comes, tell him to change the threshold of his door.” When Ismā'īl returned, she told him. He said: “You are that threshold—go back to your family.” So, he divorced her. Then, Ibrāhīm (upon whom be peace) again felt the desire to check on his dependents. He came and asked: “Where is Ismā'īl (upon whom be peace)?” His wife said: “He has gone hunting.” She said: “Will you not stay and eat and drink?” He asked: “What is your food and drink?” She said: “Our food is meat and our drink is water.” He said: “O Allāh, bless them in their food and their drink.” Abū al-Qāsim ﷺ said: “This is the blessing from the supplication of Ibrāhīm (upon whom be peace).” Later Ibrāhīm (upon whom be peace) again wished to check on his dependents. He came and met Ismā'īl (upon whom be peace) behind Zamzam, repairing some arrows. He said: “O Ismā'īl (upon whom be peace), your Lord has commanded me to build a House for Him.” Ismā'īl (upon whom be peace) said: “Obey your Lord.” He said: “He has commanded me that you should help me in it.” Ismā'īl said: “Then I will do so.” So, they began building: Ibrāhīm building and Ismā'īl (peace be upon both of them) handing him the stones. They were saying: “Our Lord, accept from us; indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.” They continued until the building became high and the old man became weak in carrying stones. So, he stood upon the stone of the Maqām, while Ismā'īl (upon whom be peace) handed him the stones, and they kept saying: “Our Lord, accept from us; indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.”
