Sub-Chapter (Baab)

Sahih Al Bukhari 3342

‘Abdān said: ‘Abdullāh informed us; Yūnus informed us; from al-Zuhrī. And Aḥmad ibn Ṣāliḥ narrated to us; ‘Anbasah narrated to us; Yūnus narrated to us; from Ibn Shihāb, who said:

Anas said that Abū Dharr (may Allāh be content with him) used to relate that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: The roof of my house was opened while I was in Makkah, and Jibrīl (upon whom be peace) descended. He opened my chest, then washed it with the water of Zamzam. Then, he brought a golden basin filled with wisdom and faith and poured it into my chest, then closed it. Then, he took my hand and ascended with me to the heaven. When he came to the lowest heaven, Jibrīl (upon whom be peace) said to the gatekeeper of the heaven, ‘Open.’ He said, ‘Who is this?’ He said, ‘This is Jibrīl (upon whom be peace).’ He said, ‘Is anyone with you?’ He said, ‘Muḥammad (ﷺ) is with me.’ He said, ‘Has he been sent for?’ He said, ‘Yes.’ He said, ‘Then open.’ When we ascended to the heaven, there was a man with dark figures to his right and dark figures to his left. When he looked to his right he laughed, and when he looked to his left he wept. He said, ‘Welcome to the righteous Prophet and the righteous son.’ I said, ‘Who is this, O Jibrīl (upon whom be peace)?’ He said, ‘This is Ādam (upon whom be peace), and these dark figures to his right and left are the souls of his children. Those on his right are the people of Paradise, and those on his left are the people of the Fire. When he looks to his right he laughs, and when he looks to his left he weeps.’ Then Jibrīl (upon whom be peace) ascended with me to the second heaven and said to its gatekeeper, ‘Open.’ He said to him as the first had said, and he opened.” Anas said: He mentioned that he found in the heavens Idrīs, Mūsā, ‘Īsā, and Ibrāhīm (peace be upon all of them), but he did not specify to me their exact stations, except that he mentioned he found Ādam (upon whom be peace) in the lowest heaven and Ibrāhīm in the sixth. Anas said: When Jibrīl passed by Idrīs (peace be upon both of them), he said, ‘Welcome to the righteous Prophet and the righteous brother.’ I said, ‘Who is this?’ He said, ‘This is Idrīs (upon whom be peace).’ Then I passed by Mūsā (upon whom be peace), and he said, ‘Welcome to the righteous Prophet and the righteous brother.’ I said, ‘Who is this?’ He said, ‘This is Mūsā (upon whom be peace).’ Then I passed by ʿĪsā (upon whom be peace), and he said, ‘Welcome to the righteous Prophet and the righteous brother.’ I said, ‘Who is this?’ He said, ‘ʿĪsā (upon whom be peace).’ Then I passed by Ibrāhīm (upon whom be peace), and he said, ‘Welcome to the righteous Prophet and the righteous son.’ I said, ‘Who is this?’ He said, ‘This is Ibrāhīm (upon whom be peace).’ Ibn Ḥazm informed me that Ibn ‘Abbās and Abū Ḥabbah al-Anṣārī used to say that the Prophet ﷺ said: “Then I was ascended until I reached a level where I heard the scratching of the ﷺ pens.” Ibn Ḥazm and Anas ibn Mālik (may Allāh be content with them) said that the Prophet said: “Then, Allāh obligated upon me fifty prayers. I returned with that until I passed by Mūsā (upon whom be peace). He said, ‘What has been obligated upon your nation?’ I said, ‘Fifty prayers have been obligated upon them.’ He said, ‘Return to your Lord, for your nation will not be able to bear that.’ So I returned and consulted my Lord, and He reduced half of it. I returned to Mūsā (upon whom be peace), and he said, ‘Return to your Lord,’ and he mentioned similar words. So He reduced half of it. I returned to Mūsā (upon whom he peace) and informed him. He said, ‘Return to your Lord, for your nation will not be able to bear that.’ So I returned and consulted my Lord, and He said, ‘They are five, but they are fifty. The word with Me does not change.’ I returned to Mūsā (upon whom be peace), and he said, ‘Return to your Lord.’ I said, ‘I feel shy before my Lord.’ Then he proceeded with me until he came to Sidrah al-Muntahā (the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary). It was covered with colours that I do not know of. Then, I was admitted into Paradise, and there were domes of pearls, and its soil was musk.”
