(Imam Bukhari narrates that) Abu Al-Yaman narrated to us, he said: Shu'aib informed us, from Az-Zuhri, he said: Amir bin Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas informed me, from Hazrat Sa'd (may Allāh be pleased with him), that

the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ gave (gifts) to a group, and Hazrat Sa'd was sitting there, and he left out a man who was, in my view, very deserving. I said: O Messenger of Allāh! Why did you not give to such-and-such person? For by Allāh, I certainly consider him a believer. He said: Or (do you mean) a Muslim? I remained silent for a while, then what I knew about him overcame me, and I repeated my statement; I said: Why did you not give to such-and-such person? For by Allāh, I certainly consider him a believer. He said: Or a Muslim? Then what I knew about him overcame me again, and I repeated my statement, and the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ repeated his statement. Then he said: O Sa'd! I give to a person while someone else is dearer to me, out of fear that Allāh will cast him headlong into the Fire.

Imam Bukhari said: And this hadith has been narrated by Yunus, and Salih, and Ma'mar
