Al-Imām al-Bukhārī - upon whom be mercy - narrates: Abū al-Yamān narrated to us; he said: Shu’ayb informed us from al-Zuhrī, who said: ‘Aṭā’ ibn Yazīd informed me

from Ḥumrān, the freed slave of Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān (may Allāh Almighty be content with him), who said: I saw Sayyidunā ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān - may Allāh Almighty be content with him - request water for ablution. He poured water from the vessel over his two hands and washed them three times. Then he placed his right hand into the vessel, rinsed his mouth, drew water into his nose, and expelled it. He then washed his face three times, washed his hands up to the elbows three times, wiped over his head, and washed each of his feet three times. Thereafter, he said: “I saw the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ perform ablution in the same manner as this ablution of mine, and he ﷺ said: ‘Whoever performs ablution as I have performed this ablution, then offers two units of prayer without allowing his heart to be occupied by worldly thoughts, Allāh the Exalted will forgive his previous sins.’”
