Al-Imām al-Bukhārī - upon whom be mercy - narrates: ‘Abd al-‘Azīz ibn ‘Abdullāh al-Uwaysī related to us; he said: Ibrāhīm ibn Saʿd related to me, from Ibn Shihāb, who said: ‘Aṭā’ ibn Yazīd informed him that Ḥumrān, the freed slave of ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān (may Allāh Almighty be content with him), informed him that:

He saw ‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān - may Allāh Almighty be content with him - call for a vessel of water. He poured water over both of his hands three times and washed them. Then he placed his right hand into the vessel, rinsed his mouth, and inhaled water into his nose. He then washed his face three times, washed his arms up to the elbows three times, wiped his head, and washed both of his feet up to the ankles three times. Then he said: “I saw the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ perform ablution in this manner, and he ﷺ said: ‘Whoever performs ablution as I have performed this ablution, then offers two rak’ahs of prayer without allowing his soul to converse with him (that is, without indulging in worldly thoughts), his previous sins will be forgiven.’”
