Narrated by Al-Imām al-Bukhārī (upon whom be mercy): ‘Abdullāh ibn Muslamah reported from Imām Mālik, from Mūsā ibn ‘Uqbah, from Kurayb, the freed servant of Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allāh Almighty be content with both of them),

from Usāmah ibn Zayd (may Allāh Almighty be content with him), that he said: “I heard Usāmah narrate that the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ sometimes did not perform complete ablution at the first opportunity. For example, when he reached a valley, he dismounted and relieved himself, yet did not perform full Wudu’. I asked, ‘O Messenger of Allāh ﷺ, what about the prayer?’ He replied: ‘The prayer is ahead of you.’ Then he mounted his camel and continued. When he arrived at Muzdalifah, he dismounted and performed complete ablution. Afterwards, the call for prayer (adhaan) was made, and he ﷺ prayed Maghrib. Each person then settled their camels in their places. Later, the call for ‘Ishā’ was announced, and he ﷺ prayed. Between these two obligatory prayers, he did not offer any voluntary (nawāfil) prayers.”
