Al-Imām al-Bukhārī narrates: ‘Alī ibn ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us; he said: Sufyān narrated to us; he said: ‘Amr informed me; he said: Kurayb informed me from Ibn ‘Abbās - may Allāh Almighty be content with him: The Prophet ﷺ slept until the gentle sound of his breathing was perceptible, then he prayed. And sometimes it was said that he would lie down until he snored, then he would stand up and pray. Then Sufyān narrated to us another time after that: From ‘Amr, from Kurayb, from Ibn ‘Abbās - may Allāh Almighty be content with him, who said: One night I stayed at the house of my maternal aunt, Maymūnah - may Allāh Almighty be content with her. During the night, when part of it had passed, the Prophet ﷺ got up, took a water skin, and performed ablution. ‘Amr said: He performed a light and minimal ablution, then he stood and began to pray. I also performed ablution in the same manner as he had performed ablution, then I came and stood on his left side— and sometimes Sufyān used the word “shimāl” instead of “yasār”, both meaning the left side. He then turned me around and placed me on his right side. He prayed as much as Allāh willed, then he lay down and slept until he began to snore. Then the caller to prayer came to him and informed him of the prayer. He stood up with him and went to the prayer, and he did not perform ablution again. We said to ‘Amr: People say that the eyes of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ would sleep, but his heart would not sleep. ‘Amr said: I heard ‘Ubayd ibn ‘Umayr say: The dreams of the prophets are revelation, then he recited the verse: “Indeed, I see in a dream that I am sacrificing you.” (Qur’ān 37:102)
