Al-Imām al-Bukhārī narrates: Qays ibn Ḥafṣ narrated to us. He said: ‘Abd al-Wāḥid narrated to us. He said: al-A’mash (Sulaymān) narrated to us, from Ibrāhīm, from ʿAlqamah,

from ‘Abdullāh ibn Mas’ūd (may Allāh Almighty be content with him), who said: I was walking with the Prophet ﷺ in the ruins of Madīnah, and he was leaning on a stick which he had with him. He passed by a group of Jews, and some of them said to others: “Ask him about the soul.” Some of them said, “Do not ask him, lest he give you an answer you dislike.” Others said, “We will certainly ask him.” Then one of them stood up and said, “O Abū al-Qāsim! What is the reality of the soul?” The Prophet ﷺ remained silent. I said to myself, “Revelation is being sent down to him,” so I stood up. When the state of revelation left him, he recited: “And they ask you concerning the soul. Say: The soul is from the command of my Lord, and you have not been given of knowledge except a little.” (Banī Isrāʾīl 17:85)

Al-A’mash said: “This is how it is in our recitation.”
