Al-Imām al-Bukhārī narrates: ‘Abdullāh ibn Muḥammad narrated to us. He said: Sufyān narrated to us. He said: ‘Amr narrated to us. He said: Sa’īd ibn Jubayr informed me. He said: I said to ‘Abdullāh ibn ‘Abbās (may Allāh Almighty be content with him):

Nawf al-Bikālī claims that the Mūsā mentioned in the Qur’ān alongside al-Khiḍr is not the Mūsā of Banī Isrā’īl, but another Mūsā. Ibn ‘Abbās said: “The enemy of Allāh has lied.” Ubayy ibn Ka’b (may Allāh Almighty be content with him) narrated to us that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Mūsā (upon whom be peace) once stood delivering a sermon among Banī Isrā’īl. He was asked: Who is the most knowledgeable of people? He replied: I am the most knowledgeable. So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, reproached him because he did not refer the knowledge back to Allāh. Allāh then revealed to him: Indeed, there is a servant of Mine at the junction of the two seas who is more knowledgeable than you. Mūsā said: My Lord, how can I reach him? It was said to him: Take a fish in a basket. Wherever you lose the fish, there you will find him. So Mūsā set out, and with him was his attendant Yūshaʿ ibn Nūn. They carried a fish in a basket. When they reached a rock, they laid their heads down and fell asleep. The fish slipped out of the basket and made its way into the sea, carving for itself a tunnel-like path. This was astonishing for Mūsā and his attendant. They continued travelling for the rest of the night and the following day. When morning came, Mūsā said to his attendant: “Bring us our morning meal; indeed, we have suffered fatigue from this journey.” (al-Kahf: 62) Mūsā only felt tired after they had passed the place they had been commanded to reach. Then his attendant said: “Did you see when we took refuge at the rock? Indeed, I forgot the fish…” (al-Kahf: 63) Mūsā said: “That is what we were seeking.” So they retraced their steps, following their footprints. When they reached the rock, they found a man wrapped in a garment, or he said: covered by his garment. Mūsā greeted him. Al-Khiḍr said: “How can there be peace in your land?” Mūsā said: I am Mūsā. He said: The Mūsā of Banī Isrāʾīl? He replied: Yes. Mūsā said: “May I follow you so that you teach me some of the righteous knowledge that you have been taught?” Al-Khiḍr said: “Indeed, you will never be able to have patience with me.” (al-Kahf: 67) He said: “O Mūsā, I have knowledge from Allah which He has taught me and which you do not know, and you have knowledge from Allah which He has taught you and which I do not know.” Mūsā said: “You will find me, if Allāh wills, patient, and I will not disobey you in anything.” (al-Kahf: 69) Then they set out and walked until they reached the seashore. A boat passed by, and they asked its people to carry them. They recognised al-Khiḍr and carried them without any payment. A bird came and perched on the edge of the boat, dipping its beak into the sea once or twice. Al-Khiḍr said: “O Mūsā, my knowledge and your knowledge, compared to the knowledge of Allāh, are like what this bird has taken from the sea with its beak.” Then al-Khiḍr took hold of one of the planks of the boat and tore it out. Mūsā said: “These people carried us without payment, and you have damaged their boat so that you may drown its people!” Al-Khiḍr said: “Did I not say that you would never be able to have patience with me?” Mūsā said: “Do not take me to task for what I forgot.” (al-Kahf: 73) This was the first instance of forgetfulness on the part of Mūsā. Then they continued on until they encountered a boy playing with other boys. Al-Khiḍr seized the boy by the head and killed him. Mūsā said: “Have you killed an innocent soul without it having killed anyone?” (al-Kahf: 74) Al-Khiḍr said: “Did I not tell you that you would never be able to have patience with me?” (al-Kahf: 75) Ibn ʿUyaynah said: Here the rebuke is even stronger. Then they continued until they came to the people of a town and asked them for food, but they refused to show them hospitality. They found there a wall that was about to collapse, so al-Khiḍr repaired it with his own hand. Mūsā said: “If you wished, you could have taken payment for it.” Al-Khiḍr said: “This is the parting between me and you.” (al-Kahf: 78) The Prophet ﷺ said: “May Allāh have mercy on Mūsā. We wished that he had remained patient so that more of their story would have been narrated to us.”
