Al-Imām al-Bukhārī narrated: Yahyā ibn Sulaymān narrated to us; he said: Ibn Wahb narrated to me; he said: Yūnus informed me from Ibn Shihāb from ‘Ubaydullāh ibn ‘Abdullāh

from Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allāh Almighty be content with him) that he said: “When the pain among the Banū Tayy reached a great intensity, the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Bring me a book (paper), I will write for you a letter such that after it, you will not go astray.’ Umar (may Allāh Almighty be content with him) said: ‘Indeed, the pain is overpowering us, and we have the Book of Allāh, which is sufficient for us.’ Then there was disagreement among the companions and much noise arose. The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘Step aside from me; there should be no dispute with me.’ Then Ibn ‘Abbās (may Allāh Almighty be content with him) said afterwards: ‘Indeed, the greatest tribulation was the one that occurred between the Prophet ﷺ and the writing.’”
