(Imām Bukhārī narrates): Yahyā ibn Bukair narrated to us, he said: Laith narrated to me, from 'Uqail, from Ibn Shihāb (ح) and Ahmad ibn Sālih narrated to me, he said: 'Anbasah narrated to us, he said: Yūnus narrated to us, from Ibn Shihāb, he said: 'Urwah narrated to me, from 'Ā'ishah, may Allāh be pleased with her, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, she narrates that:

the sun was eclipsed in the lifetime of the Prophet ﷺ, so the Prophet ﷺ went out towards the mosque; so the Muslims formed a row behind him; so he said "Allāhu Akbar," so the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ recited at length, then he said "Allāhu Akbar," so he performed a long rukū', then he said "Sami'a Allāhu liman hamidah," so he stood up and did not perform sajdah, and he recited at length, and this was less than the first recitation, then he said "Allāhu Akbar" and performed a long rukū', and this was less than the first rukū', then he said "Sami'a Allāhu liman hamidah, Rabbanā wa laka al-hamd," then he performed sajdah, then he prayed the second rak'ah similar to the first rak'ah, so he completed four rukū's in four sajdahs, and the sun had become uncovered before he turned. Then he stood up and praised and extolled Allāh in a manner befitting Him, then said: These are two signs among the signs of Allāh; they are not eclipsed because of anyone's death, nor because of anyone's life. So when you see them, take refuge in prayer.

And Kathīr ibn 'Abbās used to narrate this hadith often, that Ibn 'Abbās, may Allāh be pleased with them both, on the day the sun was eclipsed, narrated similar to this hadith, from 'Urwah, from 'Ā'ishah, may Allāh be pleased with her. So I said to 'Urwah that on the day the eclipse occurred in Madīnah, your brother did not pray more than two rak'ahs of the Fajr prayer. 'Urwah said: Yes! But he made an error in the sunnah.
