(Imām Bukhārī narrates): Muhammad bin Kathir narrated the hadith to us, from Sufyan, he said: Mansur and al-A'mash narrated the hadith to us, from Abi al-Duha, from Masruq, he said: I came to Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud (Allāh be pleased with him), so he said that

Quraish delayed in bringing faith, so the Prophet ﷺ made the supplication of harm against them, so drought seized them, to the extent that they were perishing in it, and they ate the dead and the bones. Then Abu Sufyan came to him ﷺ and said: "O Muhammad ﷺ! You have come commanding that ties with relatives be kept, and your people are perishing, so pray to Allāh the Exalted." So he ﷺ recited this verse: "So await the day when the sky will bring a clear smoke. (Ad-Dukhan: )" Then they returned to their disbelief; regarding this, Allāh the Exalted has said: "The day We will seize them with a great seizing. (Ad-Dukhan: )" This refers to the day of Badr.

Asbat added, from Mansur, that then the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ supplicated, then they were given water through rain, then it kept raining upon them continuously for seven days, and the people complained of the excess of rain, so he ﷺ supplicated: "O Allāh! Rain around us, not upon us." Then the clouds cleared completely, so in that year the people were given water abundantly.
