(Imām Bukhārī narrates): Uthman bin Abi Shaybah narrated the hadith to us, he said: Jarir narrated the hadith to us, from Mansur, from Abi al-Duha, from Masruq, he narrated that we were sitting with Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (Allāh be pleased with him), he informed that

when the Prophet ﷺ saw the people turning away from Islam, he made this supplication of harm for them: "O Allāh! Afflict them with famine for seven years, just as there was a famine of seven years in the time of Hazrat Yusuf (peace be upon him)." So the famine seized them in such a way that everything perished, to the extent that these people ate leather, carrion, and even dead animals. If any of them looked towards the sky, he would see smoke due to the intensity of hunger. Then Abu Sufyan came to him ﷺ and said: "O (Sayyiduna) Muhammad ﷺ! You command obedience to Allāh and kindness to relatives, and your people are perishing, so pray to Allāh the Exalted for them." And Allāh the Exalted has said: "O Prophet! Await the day when a clear smoke will appear from the sky. (Ad-Dukhan: ) ... (up to His saying) ... you are returning (towards disbelief), the day We will seize with great severity. (Ad-Dukhan: -)" Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud informed that the severe seizing was on the day of Badr, and the smoke, the seizing, Al-Lizam, and the verse of Rome have already passed.
